US forces set up 936 AM in Afghanistan

Coalition forces and local authorities in Qalat, Afghanistan, launched a new local station called 936 AM on April 20. The station, sponsored by the U.S. Commander’s Emergency Relief Program, cost approximately $200,000 and took six months to complete. At the inauguration ceremony, 200 handheld receivers were given to the local people. AM 936 broadcasts include talk and music programming, and for instance a message board. News about the station was first published by the Department of Defense on May 15, and quoted by Kevin Redding on the ABDX mailing list on May 16.

Radio Bethel launched on the Buenos Aires X-band

Radio Bethel from Villa Caraza, Partido de Lanus, Provincia de Buenos Aires is a new religious station broadcasting on 1640 kHz mediumwave. According to Arnaldo Slaen, who reported hearing the station first on May 8, the signal in Buenos Aires is strong, and the previous dominant on the frequency, Radio Bolivia, is off the air. Radio Bethel broadcasts programs by the Asamblea de Dios (Assemby of God) church. Phone number 4276-2423 has been announced.
