Russian on 1467

Postby Gert Nilsson on Sun Mar 09, 2003 1934 UTC

This afternoon I heard a station with religious programming in Russian on 1467,02 peaking around 15.30 UTC . Some QRM from Iran. Best on my antenna for south Asia. I suspect somewhere in Central Asia. Nothing listed.

This might be the answer (from CumbreDX): (Admin's note: since March 9 the news, in edited form, has also been found at http://www.dxing.info/news/ )

"KYRGYZSTAN. Radio EXTOL, works on the frequency 1467 kHz 12.00-18.00 (UTC).
75kW transmitter is used for broadcasting ,with non directed aerial,
located in Bishkek. There are popular songs of western and russian
singers on the air and also the daily releases of TWR prepared in the Alma-Ati studio.I Releases of TWR programs appear in blocks every half-hour in 15.30-16.00 (UTC) and 16.30-17.00 (UTC). The address of the station AM1467@hotmail.com. Technical management of the station is interested in reception reports and asks to send them to the address
timskar@pisem.net, Timur Karimov. The reports about the reception of
the programs, broadcasting on frequencies 4940 kHz 13.00-16.00 (UTC) and 4050 kHz 16.00-19.00 (UTC) are also possible to send to the same
address. It is desirable to mention in the letter that you would like to
receive QSL -card as confirmation. (Alexander Polyakov, Tashkent, Uzbekistan via Klepov RUS-DX)

And this also solves the mystery of the religious station on 4050.

Thank you for your information. This fits very nicely with time, antenna choice, fade in, peaking, you name it!

Yes, this item in RUS-DX was very interesting. But there are still some questions I'd like to be answered. I recall that most of the broadcasting transmitters in Kyrgyzstan are owned by a state company, let's call it "Kyrgyz Telecom" (maybe someone knows the original name). This company rents the transmitters to various private and state broadcasters. I believe 1467 is just one of these transmitters (some years ago there was listed a tx estimated 30kW in Bishkek on 1467), and R Extol just buys the airtime. Are the R Extol programs in Russian? And the TWR programs too?. Is Mr. Timur Karimov working at R Extol or at "Kyrgyz Telecom"? Are those 4050/4940 programs really made by R Extol? It is hard to believe that a private station (?) would transmit month after month non-stop pops on shortwave, without ads and announcements and without proper ID. Well, just recently they added short Farsi christian program. Could it be that this sw operation is done by "Kyrgyz Telecom"? Why - maybe to keep frequencies occupied, transmitter(s) functioning and/or attracting airtime buyers. Hopefully we get these questions answered in the near future.

I sent an e-mail to TWR Eurofreqs in Austria and asked some questions
about R Extol and TWR programs from Bishkek. They seem to be
unwilling to give any info at the moment. Here's their reply.
----
Dear Mr. Savolainen,

TWR is presently conducting test transmissions via Radio Extol.

Those are transmitted from1530-1600 and from 1630-1700 UTC on medium wave 1467 kHz

I cannot give you any further information, since these are currently only
test transmissions.

Counting on your understanding.

Kind regards,

Bernhard Schraut
(Freq. Manager)

Just received a QSL card from Trans World Radio (Germany) with a family picture of the v/s Nick Siemens. In March 2003 I picked up TWR programming in Russian on 1467 kHz, tx location Bishkek according to the QSL. It has been reported ( http://www.dxing.info/news/2003_03.dx#extol ) that the station in question was Radio Extol, but they haven´t responded to my reports, and Radio Extol was not mentioned in the QSL. According to the QSL, the transmitter power was over 150 kW. I wonder if this is still on, haven´t noticed it reported this season.

Some time ago I received a QSL from TWR Vienna office for my report of TWR English program on 1467. The QSL gives tx location as "Central Asia". Luckily I got couple of e-mails from the program producer "MemCare by Radio" confirming my report correct and telling the tx is located in Bishkek. I believe they are still on 1467 1530-1700 UTC in various languages, last 15 minutes in English.

Hmm, the MemCare by Radio website http://www.gospelcom.net/twr/memcare/schedule.php says they are now only via Armenia on 864 and sw. Just wonder if also the other languages via
Bishkek have shifted somewhere else. The previous schedule I mentioned was summertime, so now it should be 1630-1800 UTC.

Heh, once more. TWR programs seem to continue via Bishkek as I heard on 24 Nov at 1743 the start of the TWR English program on 1467.
