555kHz and 1.710kHz station identification

Postby Danny Boulet on Sat Mar 07, 2009 1827 UTC

Hi everyone. A year ago or so, the canadian station CHLN 550kHz in Trois-rivières, Québec moved to FM and turned off their transmitter. Then, I noticed a strange signal on 555kHz. Voice is english and some music can be hear. After some search, the only possible nearest station is St-Kitts in the lesser antilles. I think it's impossible to get this station here in Québec city with a superradio one in my basement. Sometime the signal raise to a understable level for some minutes and then falls to unaudible for minutes and raise again for the same time. Anyone can tell me what could be this station?

Another catch is 1.710mHz. A search returned to be a New-York station and another in Boston, MA. They are listed at 1KW of power. Could it be possible to catch those station here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll post another strange phenomena that I heard last year in another post. Sorry for my not perfect english but my mother tongue is french. Thanks

Danny

I'm sure your catch on 555 kHz is ZIZ Radio in St. Kitt's as there are no other broadcasting stations operating on that frequency. I understand that it has been previously heard also around your area, thanks to the split frequency.

Regarding the station on 1710 kHz, I am sure it would be possible to hear it in your area, whether it be New York or Boston. In fact, having just returned from Lapland (Finland), I also heard a station on this frequency, but I haven't had time to check it out yet. What I would appreciate is someone locally measuring the exact frequencies - down to Hz if possible - of these pirate stations around the top of the dial.
