hf beacons

Postby Eric Weatherall on Thu Aug 20, 2009 0630 UTC

I've recently become interested in shortwave beacons. Two groups called NCDXF and IARU run a worldwide network of 18 beacons that each transmit every three minutes on five different frequencies. To learn more about the NCDXF/IARU beacons: http://www.ncdxf.org/beacons.html

So far I've only received the W6WX beacon (approx 50 miles/80 kilometers away from me), although I received it on all five frequencies. I'm confined to using an indoor antenna in a small apartment.

The beacon callsigns are transmitted in 22wpm morse code, and I recorded the broadcasts to decode the morse afterward.

Here's a page that lists many more beacons: http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/por/28.htm

I haven't received any of the beacons on that list aside from W6WX.
